Middle School

Middle School rowing, for grades 6-8 (ages 11-14), is focused on fun and learning, as well as fitness. Athletes are taught the basics of the rowing stroke along with boat handling, terminology, and caring for the equipment. Middle school rowers will be taught sculling (rowing with 2 oars) with an emphasis on developing fundamental skills and working as a team. To introduce young rowers to the excitement of competition, middle school rowers may row in at least one exhibition race per season, if an exhibition event is offered at regattas attended by the high school youth team.

A developmental program like this one allows rowers to learn to work in a team environment and gain rowing skills while minimizing the risks for injury.  One of the greatest benefits to rowers is that, unlike many sports, rowing is non-impact.  Muscle development can occur with minimal risk to the health of bones and joints.

Our middle school program meets three times per week; on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm, and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
